Characterized by or involving physical activity or exertion; active 3. Physically strong and well-developed; muscular: As I was training today, I was thinking about athletes and people who look like athletes. Particularly about the difference between the idea of “sculpting/toning” and “training for sport”. Since I’ve been coaching I’ve had the experience to work with many great athletes and coaches from around the country, nearly all of the athletes I worked with had tremendous physiques and muscular development and they did it without “toning”. When I was much younger, uneducated and inexperienced (with all of my training knowledge coming from bodybuilding magazines) I didn’t understand how these athletes could look good without specifically training to look good. The more athletes and coaches I worked with the more I understood that training to increase athletic ability had an accidental side effect of making the athlete look good. Because of my experience I truly believe that if a person trains for athletic ability over appearance then their body will begin to look like they want it to along with improving health and capacity. This doesn't mean you need to train for football or basketball or any sport specifically, it means to constantly try to improve your ability and capacity, it means you need to constantly challenge yourself to make your movement patterns more precise, to get an extra rep in during the circuits, stay pushing during the intervals, and work at decreasing your rest time in those intervals. When it comes to your appearance, remember that no amount of training can overcome bad nutrition! To look better you HAVE to eat clean, but that is for another post! |
