Early in my coaching career I was the assistant coach for the Utah State University Division 1 women’s gymnastics team while I was getting my degree, and it was important that the gymnasts had a good strength to body weight ratio, meaning if they didn’t have the strength to make their body complete a skill, well then their face will probably hit the ground before their feet! Unfortunately for me and some of the gymnasts as well, I had next to zero nutritional knowledge, I hadn’t taken any nutritional courses at the time nor had the opportunity to attend many of the clinics that shaped my understanding and beliefs regarding nutrition. Here was my sum total take on nutrition and gymnastics: lighter is better, skinnier is lighter therefore a skinny gymnast will be able to perform better. I WAS WRONG!!!!! The part I was right about is the strength to weight ratio. But it is far healthier to increase strength and eat properly and let weight fall where it may.
I told you that story to tell you this. The purpose of eating Paleo is to improve all of your functions. It is soooooo much more important to look at your nutrition with the intention of functioning better than it is to lose weight. Please don’t try this, but it is possible to eat really badly and still lose weight, don’t be dumb and try it because it’ll cause all sorts of problems that you really don’t want. I know you don’t hear this on TV or from nearly anywhere but here, but eating with the sole purpose of getting skinny is not even close to the best way of looking at your nutrition. We all have to eat to live, so to give our bodies the best opportunity to live life to its fullest we should provide our bodies with the best fuel we can.
I’m sure you’ve heard that the country is having an obesity epidemic. Which means that people have to lose weight. Well, how does that sync with the thought of not eating to primarily lose weight? Well, once you start providing the proper fuel to your body, the mechanisms and systems that regulate fat retention and fat loss start to kick in and your metabolism begins to work how it’s supposed to which will bring about dramatic weight loss and improved bio-markers (blood pressure, cholesterol etc).
We do many things in our lives with the intention of bettering our situation, work harder at our job to get a promotion, spend more time with our kids, work on getting an advanced degree etc. I challenge you to intent to eat for optimal function. Know that every thing you are putting into your mouth is either good fuel or bad fuel and will have a positive or negative effect. What you eat is never an accident it is always a choice.
Choose the best fuel!
